An anon brought this to my attention.
This is the same kind of reaction you probably saw when Steve Jobs died and his detractors came out of the woodwork, saying, “WELL ACTUALLY, JEF RASKIN WAS REALLY THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR APPLE’S ACHIEVEMENTS” or some shit like that. There will always be contrarians who make disparaging remarks in an attempt to marginalize what they perceive as hero worship. Trying to harm Jim Marshall’s credibility by pigeonholing him as “just a drummer, therefore he must have had to rip his designs from Fender” is silly. People don’t like when their public figures can do more than one thing well.
It was uncalled for, for sure, but I think those who are upset by this statement are taking it as a lot more mean-spirited and vitriolic than it may have actually been. It definitely doesn’t change the fact that Emperor makes great gear and I’d still buy one of their cabs. I guess the company is trying to galvanize their real customer base and alienate the rest? I don’t know. As a small business owner myself, it’s probably not the path I’d take.
